Rest and recovery apply to all sports. Simply because it’s during the rest period, our bodies are allowed to adapt to the stresses associated with exercise and are provided time to repair tissue damage. In addition, through sleep, the body releases the hormones that help with growth and replenish the body’s energy stores to prepare us for our next training better.

Therefore, we train to maximize recovery and reap all the benefits of our workouts or training. This requires a well-thought-out and strategic approach. Simply, we train to recover and not the other way around.

Every exercise triggers a stress or training response. When we push ourselves beyond our limits, our bodies undergo “stress” with depletion of energy reserves and damage of tissues, which our bodies will eventually repair and restore to maintain homeostasis. Our bodies will constantly adapt to the stress applied to them, such as the type of training we engage in based on our fitness goals and is accomplished through the recovery process.

After training, our bodies need a sufficient amount of rest and recovery. To adapt, there must be a time for rest when the body isn’t receiving any stress so that recovery can occur. Not having enough recovery periods can lead to incomplete recovery. The body will break down and become weaker, keeping off any potential gains and increasing the risk of injuries. The greater the stress, the greater the need for recovery. Recovery from exercise is a make-or-break period in which individuals are either at risk for adverse events or up for favourable training adaptations.
